Vioxx and Heart Attacks

Recent studies have shown that Vioxx can increase the incidence of heart attack to nearly four times greater than that of traditional arthritis pain relievers like Motrin or naproxen. While the risk of heart attack is still low, it is a concern for those users who may have had cardiac problems in the past.

Research has proven that selective Cox-2 inhibition (how Vioxx works) throws off the body’s normal balance. When this homeostatic balance is disrupted a chemical imbalance occurs that results in the development of blood clots. These blood clots form within the vascular system and tend to develop in the coronary arteries or the arteries of the brain. When this occurs a heart attack or stroke usually results.

Signs of a heart attack include:

  • squeezing or heavy pressure

  • chest tightness

  • chest pain

  • "an elephant sitting on [your] chest"

  • bad indigestion

  • shortness of breath

  • cough

  • dizziness, lightheadedness

  • fainting

  • nausea or vomiting

  • sweating

  • feeling of "impending doom"

  • anxiety

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these heart attack symptoms after taking Vioxx.
